MATRON APPOINTED
PALMERSTON NORTH HOSPITAL.
AIISS LILIAN BANKS
To fill the vacancy of matron of the Palmerston North Hospital, caused by the death of Aliss J. N. AtcGhie, tho Hospital Board to-day decided, subject to tho approval of the Health Department, to appoint Miss Lilian Banks, at present tutor-sister at tho local institution. There were many applications from all parts of the Lominion.
Miss Banks was educated at tho Christchurch Girls’ High School and attained . her matriculation. She was trained at the Christchurch' Hospital and passed the State examination for nurses in 1924 and the State examination for midwives in 1925. In 1926 sho was appointed ward sister at Christchurch and later in the same year was placed in charge of the operating theatre. In 1933 she took a post-graduate diploma in hospital administration at Wellington, and after further service at Christchurch w;as appointed tutorsister at Palmerston North, bin 1934. On three occasions nurses she has trained passed their examinations with distinction, and twice gained : first place in the Dominion. In March, 1936, Aliss Banks was granted leave of absence to proceed to England and the Gontinent in order to gain further experience in hospital administration and education of nurses. She gained valuable knowledge and returned to the Dominion through Canada, where she also paid visits to several hospitals. She returned to Palmerston North' in February of this year. , ~ , i Besides possessing remarkable ability, Miss Banks commended herself to the board through a charming personality and a gift of leadership.
