HOCKEY
SATURDAY’S MATCHES. Only the two hockey games set down to I>o played early took place on - Saturday, the later' games being adjourned possibly by mutual consent to enable players to listen in to the Riigby Test. In the senior grade the first game of the sealed handicap series took place, Phoenix beating Broadway A by one goal to nil. There was no score at half-time, but ten minutes before the conclusion T. Comber netted. Alessrs F. ATcLachlan and D. Wilton were the umpires. Combined Services defeated Broadway in’ a junior game, the score being 6—l. For the winners, B. Leader (3), I. Byers (2) and W.. Howard scored, while R. Tliorburn ~goaled for Broadway.
RESULTS ELSEWHERE. Auckland. —Papatoetoe 2 v. Universitv 0; Grammar 0.8. 2 v. Somerville o;'Alt. Eden 4 v. Y.AI.C.A. 1. THE TEST AT SYDNEY. NEW ZEALANDERS AVIN. SYDNEY, Aug. 15. Now Zealand defeated Australia in tho hockey Test by one goal to nil. The attendance was 4000. The ground was sodden, hut the weather fine. Autsralia fielded a very poor side compared with the inter-Statc teams and Now Zealand was easily tho better team. Fino play by tho Australian backs prevented a greater score. F. S. Clark, the New Zealand back, was the outstanding player on the field, hitting the ball with tremendous power. Ho twice hit tho ball the full length of the field in the air, an amazing exhibition. The New Zealand half-backs, S. Robertson and L. Watson, were splendid in attack. They were greatly assisted by O. B. Dey, who scored the onlv goal. '■ B. D. Duffield and R. Roughton were always dangerous in the forwards.
