PAHIATUA.
PAHIATUA, Aug. 14. Mrs 0. H. Cooper is shortly leaving on a trip to England. Mr D. Thompson has been appointed first assistant of the Rongomai cheese factory. Mrs F. Brunton is on a visit to Masterton. Mr and Mrs S. K. Siddells, who has been in Wellington, returned yesterday. Mrs Brant and Mrs Britton, of Christchurch, were guests of Mrs Millar for the Batten-Miliar wedding. Airs Stone, of Wellington, was the speaker at a meeting held for the purpose of organising a Pahiatua women’s branch of the National Party. Airs Stone spoke of the benefits to be derived from such a branch. The following officers were cl’ected : —President, Airs W. H. Purdie; vice-presidents, Mrs R. Wilson, Makuri, Airs J. Y. Crawford; lion, secretary, Airs C. C. Walker; Pahiatua, Aliss Arrow; Alakuri, Miss J. Rutherford; Alakomako, Aliss A. Sargent; Alangahao, Mrs F. AV. Bibbv; Mangatainoka, Aliss J. Crawford; Ballance, Mrs F. Horne. A residence of 82 years in New Zealand was terminated when the death occurred of Air George Brown, of Alangamutu, who was in his 85th year. Born at Paisley, Scotland, in 1858, the late Air Brown came to New Zealand with his parents in the ship New Era, and landed at AVellington when two years of age. Three years later his parents took over a farm in the Upper Hutt, and on reaching school age the youngster, who was the second of five sons, attended the first school to be opened in the district, his father being associated with its establishment. On leaving school Air Brown found employment in Cruickshank’s sawmills where he was engaged for many years. In 1876 Air Brown married Miss Clarissa Annie Bowyer, daughter of Air and Mrs Edward Bowyer, of Clapham, T.ondon, who came with' her parents to New Zealand when 16 years of ago and lived at Upper Hutt. They left to reside in Haywards, where they- worked for nine years on tlie farm of Mr Brown s father. Some 42 years ago Air Brown decided to try his luck in the Forty Aide Bush district, moving to Pahiatua. They took over the property at Alangamutu which Air Brown farmed to the time of his death. On the occasion of their diamond wedding last year Air and Airs Brown were the recipients of a cablegram from King Edward. Left to mourn their loss *rith their mother are Messrs Frederick (Alangamutu) and George (Matamata) and three daughters—Miss Ellen Brown (Alangamutu), Airs Jessie Campion (Auckland), and Airs AVilliam Willisie (AVanganui). There are eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. One son AVilliam died eleven years ago in Rcefton, and Air Brown’s only surviving brother resides at Upper Hutt.
