“ONLY BRITISH SUBJECTS.”
AN AUSTRALIAN OBJECTS
One Australian at least objects strongly to Professor Berriedale Keith’s contention that “in Australia there are no nationals, but only British subjects, who .are also British nationals, the two being synonymous.” He is Edgar K. Crampton, of West Australia. He writes to the Morning Post as follows:—“I cite myself as an example of an Australian national. I and my parents, and two of my grandparents were born in West Australia. I have never set foot in any other land. I am loyal to, and proud of, my own country, and fellow-coun-trymen and women. I do not patriotically obliged to say the same about Britain, whose troubles are her own, and the least concern of mine. “I am loyal to our King, but the King’s loyal subjects in other Dominions, including Britain, are not mv fellow-countrymen. Their interests may directly oppose mine. Foreign relations may be, and often are, a train of gunpowder laid to Australia’s doorstep.” The Morning Post invites comments from other Australians to judge how far Mr Crampton is typical of Australian feeling.
