ALIEN MIGRANTS.

ARRIVALS IN AUSTRALIA. A survey of the Southern European migration to Australia in 1936-37, completed by the Department of the Interior, shows that in that year the excess of arrivals of Souliern Europeans over departures was 1963. In 1927 the net migration of Southern Europeans was 7079 persons. The Minister for tlie Interior (Mr Paterson) said that women and children represented about 26 per cent, of the net migration. Of the remainder, nearly three persons in every four had come to Australia for rural employment. Mr Paterson added that the Ministry wished to attract to Australia migrants of the Northern European races, but economic pressure in the northern part of Europe did not anneal- to he sufficiently strong to cause an appreciable migration.
