LONG SERVICE.

PLACED ON RECORD. PATRIOTIC SOCIETY SECRETARY. Appreciation of the services rendered by Mr J. Permain as secretary for a period of 23 years, until he recently retired owing to ill-health, was expressed by the Mayor'(Mr A. E. Mans.ford) when presiding at the annual meeting of the Manawatu Patriotic Society, last evening. Mr Permain, he said, had most faithfully and most zealously carried out his duties, particularly in protecting the funds of the society.

Adding his tribute, Mr B. J. Jacobs, president of the Palmerston North branch of the R.S.A., said there must be admiration for the pertinacity with which Mr Permain had devoted himself to his duties, for the care with which he had investigated claims made upon its funds, and for the remarkable manner in which he had preserved its records. This was carried, and Mr Permain was added to the executive. The secretary’s auditor (Mr R. Davis) added his eulogy of Mr Permain’s capabilities and earnestness of purpose. ~ „ _ „ The appointment of Mr E. V. Spear as secretary to succeed Mr Permain was confirmed.
