MANAVVATU ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report cf the Mana.vn.tu Lawn Tennis Association, shows that there are lb affiliated dubs, as was the case the previous, year, but llie membership lias increased from 959 to 936. 'I lie individual clubs with their respective memberships are: —Bulls 46, ]'chiding 101, loxton 52, Levin 55, Manawutu 83, Noithorn 107, Palmerston North 149. Pohangiua 13, Shannon 51, SI. Patrick’s 39, I akaro 70, West End 30, Woodville 33, Otaki 38, Longburn 22, Wliakarongo 33, Y.M.C.A. 20, Technical 31. “Owing to the universal Saturday halfholiday coming into force, competitions wore held only on Saturdays, the winners in eacli section being: Northern Ruction, A Grade, Palmerston North; B Grade. Bulls; G Grade, West End. Southern Seclion, Levin. Owing to the Easter holidays intervening it was'found impossible to play the inter-section final between Palmerston North and Levin, and tiiis match was abandoned. Representatives matches played during the season were: v. Jlutt .Valley at Wellington, lost 15 —9; v. Wairarapa. a! Mnsterton, won 13—11; v. Taranaki at Puhnerston North, lost 10—6: v. Wanganui at Palmerston North, won 16 —8. The association challenged Hawke’s Bay for the Christie Cup and travelled to Napier for the occasion; the result was a win for Manawafu by the narrow margin after each side hud won 12 rubbers of 28 sets to 26, ami 265 games to 260. 1 lie open tournament was again held in conjunction with the Palmerston North Club’s annual tournament, the winners being: Men’s clianipicaiship singles, A. D. Brown (Auckland) ; women’s singlos, Miss D. Nicliolls (Wellington); men’s doubles, W. Boddy and Dr R. Chisholm (Majiuwatu): women’s singles, Misses B. Dale (Taurangu) and M. Wade (Auckland); boys’ singles, C. Shcorin (Manawatu) ; girls' singles, Miss N. Huso (Upper iluti). “The closed tournament was held during January, the results being: Men’s championship singles, D. I. Robertson; men's doubles, W. Boddv and Dr R. Chisholm; men’s handicap, singles, J. Bottoridge; ladies’ championship singles, Mrs N. Adams; ladies’ handicap singles, Mrs N. Adams; ladies’ doubles, Mosdames A. Weston and D. Simon. “Owing, to the infantile paralysis epidemic it ivas necessary to übandon tile secondary schools tournament. During the season the association secured the services of Mr T. S. Williams, a professional coach from Wellington, and a largo number of players, including sovoral juniors, took advantage of the opportunity of securing some valuable coaching. Owing to the Now Zealand junior championship being held at Wellington, seven munioTs from Manawatu competed and, although no titles wore obtained, the experience derived by them should prove invaluable in the future. Our representatives were J. Mullins, C. Sheorin, E. Christmas, J. Moffatt, A. Johns, of Palmerston North; and S Donnelly and Miss L. ICatanti, of Levin.’’ RANKING LIST. Tlie report adds that, the balance-sheet shows n credit of £l9 l s 7d carried forward to tho next year, and a further amount of £3 collected subsequent to balance date. “Thanks are due to the Palmerston North Club for the use of their courts for tournaments; Mr N. I. Nielsen for the use of his rooms for meetings; Mr R. IT. Spencer for auditing the accountsthe ladies who assisted with refreshments at tournaments; the Press for their valuable and full reports; all who supplied transport for representative matches: and all others who voluntarily gave their services for the bonefit of tennis.”
