(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Aug. 12,

The usual meeting of tho Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Pi esent: Cr. A E. Hyde (chairman), W. Clayton, F. O Peach, J. Curran, -junr.. R R. Lind, J. A. Roach, R. E. Downes and J. Curran, eenr. Mr C. L. Hunter, M.P., wrote acknowledging receipt of tho council’s letter with reference to the Stale housing scheme. lie had made the council’s offer known to Mr J. A. Lee, M.P.. who is in charge of this department, and in due course. With reference to the conference of local bodies some months ago he would communicate with the council when it was agreed to approach the Health Department asking tho department to become a contributor to the health inspector’s salary, the Mayor of Levin wrote that ho had received a communication from the department, staling that the application for a contribution from tho department towards the expenses of the sanitary inspector had been fully considered. and it had been decided that tho depart! lent could not' ombark on such a policy. Concerning certain aspects of the inspector’s work it was pointed out that a largo number of local authorities appoint their own inspectors and in no case was any financial assistance given by tho department. The council resolved to ask the controlling authority on what terms it was. prepared to take over the work in this district. A permit to the value of £l9O was granted Mr E. J, Spencer for alterations to a bakehouse in Ballance Street. The Girl Guides were granted permission to hold a street stall. Cr. 'Curran, junr., reported that trees for Arbor Day planting would be to hand from the nurseyman. Good work had been done by tho men in getting the Domain in order for tho ceremony. A parking area was being prepared in Vogel Street. The bank round the cycling track hud been graded and would require grassing. Tho chairman reported that the men employed on the No. 5 scheme wore being paid award rates of pay, viz., £4 from the Unemployment Board and 10s from borough. lie moved that the men at present employed on No. 5 scheme bo kept on to the end of September when the position would again be reviewed. Seconded by Cr. Downes and carried. Cr. Lind reportod that tho borough horse was showing no signs of improving. Further veterinary ad vice had been received and a fortnight's treatment proscribed. Tho horse paddock had boon ploughed as directed. Ho suggested that the blind creek in tho paddock should be filled in and this was' agreed to It was agreed to hire a horse to carrj on the work of tile borough. In company with the assistant engineer of tho Public. Works Department, stated Cr. Lind, he had inspected the pipes on No. 552 main highway when it was arranged to tako out two pipo sand ascertain the condition of the other pipes crossing the street. Arbour Day was celebrated locally on Wednesday afternoon, when in the presence of tho Mayor and councillors, citizens. and school children the (reo planting ceremony was carried out. The Domain, where tho planting took place, has been receiving special attention during the past month, and the work carried out by the council has greatly added, to the attractiveness of tho grounds. Prior to the first

tree being planted by Ilis Worship the Mayor (Mr E. Butt) appropriate addresses upon the importance of Arbor Day were delivered to the children by Mr I. McDonald, headmaster, G'rs. A. E. Hyde (deputy-Mayor) and J. Curran (chairman of the Reserves Committee). One hundred ornamental shrubs of great variety were planted in the corners of the Domain, thus extending the council’s beautifying scheme in the town.

The Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr Mclntosh) paid a visit to Shannon on Wednesday afternoon and inspected sections suitable for the Government housing scheme. Arbor Day celebrations were in progress during his visit and he graciously consented to plant a tree, saying it was just 50 years since he had planted his first- Arbor Day treo.
