HOUSEHOLD HINTS.
In winter, when windows are likely to become steamy, rub over once a week with a little methylated spirit, this will prevent any steam-marks. To remove the skins from sausages before cooking, place in a basin of cold water for a minute or so- The skin will then come off cleanly. The burners of gas stoves should be cleaned once a week. Pierce the holes with a hatpin, and scour the ring in hot water and soda. Starch has many uses: It is an excellent silver polish; it removes stains from wallpaper when all else fails; added to the water when washing windows, it removes dirt easily. Scorch marks in linen may be removed by rubbing with a freshly-cut onion and afterwards soaking in cold " a if er biscuits become limp from long keeping, put them in paper and place in a cool oven for a few minutes. They will then be quite fresh again. A little grated orange rind over the sugar when cooking an apple pie gives the pie a delicious new flavour. Instead of keeping one large recipebook, buy several small ones, and index them’: Sweets, savouries, etc. You find this very convenient. Instead of icing o • cakes, try the following idea. 'When the cakes are still warm, rub over with butter and then dip in equal parts of sugar and cinnamon. / Never use warm water for sponging cocoa stains from frocks or table linen, because it sets the stains. Sponge with cold water.
To relieve tired,, aching feet, sprinkle a little flaked oatmeal in the shoes each morning, and you will be surprised at the result. ; . Use a length of chain for airing clothes on coat-hangers. The hangers may be placed as desired on the chain, without the usual danger of them all sliding together. Before cooking a duck or goose, pour boiling water over and through it. This will remove any oily flavour.
