SPAIN.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —“Fair Deal’s” letter is very typical. Firstly, lie abuses or criticises tile .League as a body. This lias nothing to do with the facts in Spain. Secondly, he says we “took up a strong partisan attitude on behalf of franco and company and lending support to intervention by Fascist Italy and .Nazi Germany.” That is simply untrue; we did nothing of the sort. Indeed our letter . definitely stated that we did not uphold” the outside intervention. What we did condemn was the inconsistency of certain people blaming Italian and German intervention while they ignored equal, or more active, lii.etvention by Russia. That is not taking a strong partisan attitude on behalf of Franco” but is merely drawing attention to a ridiculous “one-eyed point of view.” Your other correspondent s letter is somewhat confused. He drags m Abyssinia and accuses the League or being silent. What on earth has this to do with Spain? However, at the end of his letter he justifies the assistance rendered bv France and Russia to the “Government”, while apparently objecting to that afforded to Iranco. thus showing the very inconsistency we drew attention to. May we again say that we do not uphold the right o any foreign nationals to intervene, but you can’t condemn one and not the other.—We are. etc., N.Z. WELFARE LEAGLE. August 12, 1937.
