NEWBURY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) NEWBURY, Aug. 12. The monthly meeiing of the Newbury Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday, and was presided over by Mrs Thompson, who welcomed visitors and two new members, Mrs Woodbotisc being proposed by Mrs Vallander and seconded by Mrs Schew and Miss Kinipton pro]>oscd by Mrs Young and seconded by .Miss Vallander. An appeal to send Christmas gifts for the Makogai Leper Station was made. Mrs E. E. Short, of Foilding, gave an interesting demonstration on upholstery and' how to make humpties. Mrs Thompson thanked Mrs Short for coming nil the way from Foilding to give tho demonstration. Afternoon tea was served. Mrs Short and Mrs Kilpatrick kindly consented to judge tho competitions, which resulted:—Bloom: Mrs Schew 1, Mrs C. Hamlin 2. Mrs Milne 3. Wagon covers, Miss Mabel Robinson 1. Mrs Vallander 2. Miss Myrtle Robinson 3. Coffee sponge: Mrs C. Ilanilin 1. Miss Smith 2, Mrs Sheets 3. Bring-nnd-buy: Mrs C. Hamlin 1, Mrs Thompson 2, Mrs Barnaby 3. Mrs Beattie’s competition was tied for by Mesdames Davey and 11. Hamlin. Mrs Thompson thanked Mrs Short and _ Mrs Kilpatrick for judging. The competitions for the September meeting will be a mason jar of spring flowers out of members’ own gardens, and nut and date loaf. Demonstration, marcel hair waving. Hostesses, Mesdames Milne, C. Hamlin, Sanson and Miss Anderson.
