MANAWATU V. SOUTHLAND.

GOOD MATCH PROMISED.

Disappointment among followers of Rugby was general throughout New Zealand when it was learned that Mitchell, the fine Southland back, had been injured and would not be available for the first Test against the. South Africans. Hurt in the Ranfurly Shield match with Otago at Dunedin. Mitchell had earlior raised high hopes. But the spectators were agreeably surprised when the injured man’s place was taken by another piayer, Wcsney, who provided an exceedingly fine game. Wcsncy, at centre-three-quarter, wan considered by many to have played a better game than that provided by Mitchell up to the time of his departure from the field. With Southland playing Manawatu on Monday (the game commencing at the Showgrounds at 3.30 p.m.), followers of Rugby in the Manawatu will bo looking forward to seeing Wcsney in action. Wesney, however, does not provide all the attack the visiting- rearguard will have. I heir backs are fast and delight ir: the stylo of game which lends interest to any encounter, Manawatu arc expected to provide solid opposition and any advantage of the touring side in regard to combination will he countered by the fact of the opposition’s playing on their home ground.
