VICTORIA’S BUDGET.

A SURPLUS DISCLOSED. MELBOURNE, Aug. 11. Disclosing the first surplus in eight years, the Victorian Budget was presented by the Premier (Mr A. A. Dunstan) to-day. The surplus amounts to £21,000. For 1937-38, it is proposed to reduce the unemployment tax by 20 per cent., giving the taxpayers a concession of £300,000. The basic rate of payment to sustenance workers was increased 10 per cent. The year’s revenue was £25,116,000 and the expenditure £25,095,000. There was a small surplus of £1025 on 'railway operations, largely owing to a reduction in capital liability by £30,000,000.
