Large crowds cheered Signor Mussolini on his arrival in Sicily escorted bv a cruiser and six destroyers. 11 Duce declared that the visit had “exquisitely peaceful and constructive aims” and added: “Messina is the spearhead of the greatest artery dominating the Mediterranean route and will again assume? tho position to which it is entitled.”

Messina stands on the western shore of the Strait of Messina, which separates Sicily from the too ol Italy.
