PAHIATUA
PAHIATUA, Aug. 10. The wedding was celebrated at St. Peter’s Church, Pahiatua, recently of Vera, youngest daughter of ; Air and Airs W. G. Webb, of Pahiatua, and Richard C’lianning,'third son of Mrs and the late Mr T. Wolland, of Lower Hutt. Rev. 11. Wilson officiated.
The Mayor (Mr J. D. Wilson) presided over the monthly meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council last evening. The, Minister of Housing wrote stating that tho department was confining its housing operations to tho centres and secondary towns where the shortage of houses was most acute.—Tho clerk stated that the lev ter had been received before the visit ot tho Commissioner of Crown Lands to the district. The Mayor reported that the party had viewed somo sites for possible erection of houses. A proposal that the Government bo written to pointing out (hat there is a most acute shortage of housing in Pahiatua was agreed to. The Public Works Department advised that arrangements were in hand for tho recon struction of tho main road, and that it would probably be completed during the coming season. Thu Mastorton Council forwarded a statement of allocation of heavy traffic fees foi the year endec May 31. 1937, the Pahiatua Borough’s sharo being £lB6 19s Id.—Received. The Masterton Council advised that all local bodies in the No. 10 area had agreed to tho allocation of heavy traffic fees on tho basis of: Counties 75 per cont., boroughs 25 per cent.—Received. The }Vairarapa Hospital Beard forwarded a statement of estimates for tho year ended March 31, 1938, the levy required from this council being £4lB 4s.—ln roply to Cr G. 11. Hodd, tho clerk stated that the amount had been increased by £l2O over last year. The works committee reported that the approximate cost of erecting eight lights, in the square gardens was £B9, the. lighting charge being £3O per annum. Tho Mayor thought that until they could obtain details of a scheme action over tho square lighting should be withheld. It was agreed to carry out tree planting in the recreation ground. The housing inspector (Mr L. D. Lovelock) reported, inter ana; —Tho _ total .number of houses in the borough is 388, while the total number of houses recent mended to be demolished is 2; tho tolai number falling below the standards of fitness hut repairable is 23; and the totai number falling below the standard of fitness is 12. Total number of buildings affected is 37, and the total _ satisfactory houses within the borough is 351 The percentage of houses falling short of the standards is 9.5.
