BUNNYTHORPE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) BUNNYTTIORPE, Aug. 10. The death of Mr J. McCaffry last week removed a much respected sottler from our. midst. The late Mr McCaffry had resided in the district for the past twelvc_ years and before coming to Bunnytliorpe was a foreman on the railways, being sta-i tinned in different workshops. lie was compelled to retire owing to ill-healtll seme years ago, and had lived in retirement in Bunnythorpo and carried on a small farm. Though taking no part in public life, Mr McCatfry made many friends _ by bin quiet and pleasing ways with bis neighbours. lie leaves a widow and one son to mourn bis death. 'the funeral took place, at Bunnytliorpe and the large attendance showed the respect and esteem in which Mr McCaffry was hold. The. service at. the graveside was conducted by Rev. C. A. Foston, of Ashhurst, and Rev. R. E. Fordyco, of Sanson, both of the Methodist Church. At the last euchre tournament prizes were won by Miss Prieo (ladies) and Messrs Grecnhow and Godfrey (men). A school football match was played between tile Newbury and Bunnytliorpe Schools on the local grounds, resulting Newbury 16, Bunnytliorpe 9. The friends of Mr J. W. Wood will regret. to learn of the death of his brother m the Palmerston North Hospital. 'J'he following scores were recorded at the miniature ride range on Monday evening:—R. Jones 139, E. Bailey 135, 11. Hughes 138, A. Pederson 130, J. Seai'lc 137, A. McMurray 134, R. Osborne 129, G. Grant 125. R. Faulkner 120, A. Rosonbrook 129, R. Bowyer 115. D. Edwards 114, C. Williams 81. R. Pickett 119, F. Cox 134, R. Gore 135.

The monthly meeting of the School COlll- - took place on Monday evening. Present: Messrs F. McKenzie (chairman), (). .Jackson, W. T. Maxwell, A. O’Donnell, and W. Andrew, also the headmaster (Mr Abraham) who reported a roll of 98 and an average of 92. He also reported on f lie progress of the children for the fancy dress hall, which is to take place at an early date. The visiting committee reported on the grounds and general maintenance. Mr O’Donnell was appointed visiting committee for the month. Arrangements were made for Arbor Day.
