BUILDING PROGRAMME.
GOVERNMENT’S INTENTIONS: Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 9. The requirements demanding attention before the completion of menfc Buildings could be undertaken Avere referred to by the Prim© Minister (Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) in an intervieAV to-night. Housing and schools, he said, Avould have to come first. “First things must come first,” said Mr Savage Avhen asked if a start. Avith the completion of Parliament Buildings Avere likely to form part of next year’s Public Works programme so that the buildings might he finished in time for tho NeAv Zealand Centennial. “I agree that it is desirable to have the buildings finished by 1940 and thnt the provision of proper accommodation for the legislature Avould be one of the Avays by Avhich the Centennial could be adequately marked, but it is difficult to say exactly Avhen a start can be made.
“The Government’s objective is quite clear : the housing of the people and school accommodation Avith a lightening generally of the conditions under Avhich they are taught Avill come first. A number of other public buildings are also urgently required. Apart from the necessity for these services there is also tho question of skilled labour. The number of skilled tradesmen is limited. Even once a start has been made there are . a thousand and one factors affecting its progress and it Avould be difficult for one to say this or that Avill be completed in such and such a year.”
