RISE IN FREIGHT RATES.
TIMBER FI RAIS’ TROUBLES. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND,, Aug. 9. “Freights are two and a-half times greater than a vear ago, while f.o.b. prices have advanced from_ 25 to 30 per cent.,” said Air B. T. Yenderfiekl, managing director of a leading timber firm in Sydney, who is travelling to A r ancouver by the Aorangi to investigate problems connected with the carriage of timber from the Pacific Coast of America to Australia. “Some shippers have not stood un to their contracts,” he said, “and failure to deliver is a serious matter. One of the reasons for the high freights is the use of tramp steamers for the carriage of scrap metal from America to Japan. Last year the shipments exceeded one million tons.”
