REPORTER’S AUGUST HANDICAP. SUPERTAX SURPRISES. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 7. Tho New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting opened to-day. The weather was fine, the attendance gopd, and the track in good order. Totalisator investments were £33,115, as compared with £27,920 last year, an increase of £5195. After the Introductory Handicap a protest was lodged by R. Townley, driver, of Lady Sonoina, against first position being awarded Great Admiral on the grounds that he paced at the finish. Tho stewards decided from the evidence and from their own observations of the race that the protost should lie dismissed. On the finish of tho Advance Handicap an inquiry was held to consider allegations of interference by C. Tasker, driver of Full Hand, with Harlequin, driven by J. Young. After hearing the evidence it was resolved to caution Tasker for careloss driving. F. G. Holmes, driver of Graham Direct in tho August Handicap, was charged under rule 310 with not driving his horse to win. When the evidence of the owner, Mr J. Wcsterman, and of Holmes had been heard it was decided to accept their explanation. Results: — INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP, of £300; 3.34 class. One mile and a-half. 5-5 GREAT ADMIRAL, 72yds bhd (J. Lady Sonoma led from Reward, Great Admiral, Sister Mary, and Mataunga. Lady Sonoma was followed at tho half-mile by Great Admiral and they turned for home clear of Sister Mary, Mataunga, Little Rota, Guy Hugo and Golden Eagle. Great Admiral drew out to win by a length from Lady Sonoma, with Golden Eagle two lengths away and Mataunga fourth. Times: 3.23 4-5, 3.31, 3.30. ADVANCE HANDICAP, of £3OO ; 2.52 class. One mile and a quarter.

Passing the stands Credit Funds had charge Irorn Esplendor, Sky Wink, Full Hand, Harlequin, Sage King, and Aide do Camp. The leaders were the same going down the back, hut Aide de Camp turned for home clear of Esplendor, Sky Wink, William Tell and Ginger Jack. Aide de Camp drew out to win By two lengths from Sky Wink, with Ginger Jack a similar distance away and Esplendor fourth. Times: 2.47 2-5, 2".49, 2.49 1-5. With half a mile covered Gunfire was attended by Llewellyn’s Pride, I’ot I,uck, Gallant Knight, Grace McElwyn, Rocks Ahead, King’s Warrior and Reporter. Graham Direct moved up smartly down the hack and followed Gunfire with a round to cover, Llewellyn’s Pride, Reporter, Gallant Knight and Pot Luck being next. Gunfire maintained his lead to the straight, where he was ju6t clear of Reporter, who drew out to win by a length from Rocks Ahead, with Pot Luck a similar distance away. Gallant Knight was close up fourth and King’s Warrior fifth. Times; 4.31 2-5, 4.32 3-5, 4.32 4-5. I QUEEN MARY HANDICAP, of £350; 4.34 class. Two miles. 3- PARISIEXNE, scr (R. B. Scott scr, 9-9 Happy Knight, 6-6 Navy Blue, 5-5 Red Flush 12yds bhd, 4-4 Sea Gift 48. Ironside and Encounter led passing, the stands and wore followed into the back by U. Scott, who had charge with a round to cover. At the half-milo the order was U. Scott, Encounter, Ironside, King’s Play and Parisienne. King’s Play led into the straight from U. Scott, Parisienne, and En ' counter. Parisienne finished well to beat King’s Play by a head with Encounter eight lengths away and Sea Gift fourth. Times: 4.23 4-5, 4.23, 4.27 2-5. Nicoya moved up going down the straight, with Bittersweet and Raclaim next. King’s Guard stayed on to heat Bittersweet, by a neck with Nicoya a similar distance away and Raclaim fourth. In a hard finish Supertax beat Worthy Light by half a length, with Bingen Palm a length away, and Gamble fourth. Times: 2.44
