MAYFAIR THEATRE. “WINGS OVER HONOLULU.” The roar of Navy fighting 'planes, the lancorons romance of ltie tropics, :i livid, swiftly paced story—those are the elements which Universal has combined, to make top-flight entertainment of “Wings .Over Honolulu,” which screens to-night at the Mayfair Theatre. Tlie 7 picture was adapted to • the,,screen by Isabel Dawn and Boyce Depaw from, Mildred Crain's famous Red Book magazine novel of the same name. Wendy. Barrie plays a beautiful Virginia belle who marires a young Navy officer, played, by Rav AJilJgnd. ’l'lie wife lias no knowledge of the conventions, customs arid taboos ,of the naval service. She becomes embodied in a situation which almost wrecks her husband’s career. Milland will bo remombered as the leading man of “.Three Smart Girls.” So that the picture would have absolute authenticity, Universal filmed “Wings Over Honolulu” under .'the supervision of U.S. Navy officials. • Exterior scones were made on 'location against the background of Uncle Sani's fighting craft. In uddition to Miss Barrio and Alilland, the east includes such favourites as Kent. Taylor, William Gargati, Polly Rowles, Samuel Hinds, .Mary , Philips, Margaret MeWadc, Joyce Compton, Clara Blandick and Louise Beavers. The picture was directed by 11. C. Potter who recently made “Beloved Enemy.” E. M. Asher was associate producer. KOSY THEATRE. “SAINTS IN EXILE.” The star appears ns “Big Bill” Waldo, an overlord of the underworld, wdio, beneath that exterior, is a simple, appealing sort of fellow. Driven lo cover, bo takes his gang to a small town, the samo wliorn he spent his boyhood, held in esteem as sun of the local minister. Along goes Babe, with whom he shares an unspoken atfection, played by Wynne Gibson. Tho racketeer is asked to speak at a church social. Carried away by his own eloquence, ho brings tho crowd to its feet. Elated, he realises he has found a now practice, one where ho will be perfectly safe, lie becomes a fake evanagelist. The money, rolls in. To holster up Jus front of respectability, be induces . Myrtle Thornton, an innocent organist, to join . his group. This charactor, portrayed by I Evelyn Venable, helps cicate an unusual i triangle, with Bancroft centred between two ontirely different types of women. I “Saints in Exile” is screening to-night at. the Kosy Theatre. . “AVENGING WATERS.” Replete with exciting adventures, gallant gun battles and the thundering hoofs of stampeding cattle. Columbia s I drama of the great outdoors, “Avenging | Waters,” will screen to-night at the Kosy 1 Theatre. Ken Maynard is starred with a new leading lady, lovely Beth Marion, in this new thrilling photoplay of the open spaces. “Avenging Waters. 11 is tho story of Ken Morley (Ken Maynard) owner of the Diamond K ranch who falls in love with Mary Mortimer, played by Beth Marion, daughter of the new owner of tho neighbouring El Mirasol ranch, and who goes to her aid when a band of desperadoes seek to kill her father and take away his possessions. Ward Bond, chief of the outlaw gang, seeks to oust Mary’s father from his lush grazing lands first by force and later by damming tho headwaters of a river whose waters flow through Mortimer’s property. The dcs-
perado knows that Mortimer’s fine herds of cattle must have water or perish. It is Ken Maynaid who discovers the dam the villains have constructed high in tho mountain pass cutting off Mortimer s water supply. Ken tackles the desperado chieftain and they battle furious.y while a Buddeii mountain storm, . accompanied by fierce thunder and lightning, threatens to burst the darn, release the pent up water, and flood the canyon.
