WHAT IS 810-CHEMISTRY?
"Bio-chemistry is the chemistry of life,” said Sister Evans, when speaking on the above subject on Thursday niglif at the Bio-Chemic Institute. “No philosophy is proof against ill-health," 6aid tho speaker. “Our human body is like a machine; unless it is kept clean and thoroughly oiled there will bo a breakdown. It is a very simple matter to keep tit, but wo find nil sorts of people, young nnd old, running down and petering out, because the cell lifo of their bodies has been exhausted by wrong living. It is a common occurrence to see persons with eruptions and blotches on the face and hands, and other dis figurements of tho skin. Ihen there js swelling of the glands of tho neck and disorders in other parts of the body, due to a deficiency of cell salts in the blood. An analysis of the blood shows it to contain organic and inorganic matter, which is constantly being built into tho human structure. Being small in quantity, the coll salts have been thought to bo of little importance. But now it is known that they are the vital portion of tho body. Bio chemistry seeks to ascertain what salts of the blood are lacking and to supply them in just tho form needed. Any disturbance in the motion of those cell-salts in living tissues can bo Testified and the equilibrium re-established by administering tho same salts in small quantities. It is the blood that contains tho material for every tissue of the body nnd that supplies nutriment to every organ, enabling it to nerform its individual function; it is, indeed, a microcosm, able to supply every possible want to the human economy. When a plant droops for want of water or for some fertilising material which i 3 necessary for its growth, wo know that if the lacking materials aro supplied it will revive and bloom again. It is the same with the human sysstem: it is only necessary to supply the deficient material in a form which can be used by the blood "
