THE DEVIATION.
ALLOCATION OF MONEY. PROPOSALS LAUDED. Arising from a question by Mr H. E. Townshend in regard to the statement of the Minister of Railways that provision had been made by the Government for the expenditure of £IOO,OOO on the Palmerston North deviation, the Terrace End Progressive Association’s executive last evening assumed that the railway line is to be shifted there and passed a motion congratulating the Government on its decision. When Mr Townshend introduced the subject, several of those present humorously twitted him with wanting to raise a contentious .matter, but the chairman (Mr T. W. Henderson), in the course of a general discussion, asked each member present what his views were, and all said that they favoured tlie change of the railway site to Milson. No motion was placed before the meeting at the outset, but Mr A. M. Lascclles said that the removal of the railway would make a tremendous difference to Terrace End. He thought that a motion favouring the change to Mi Ison would strengthen the hands of the Government. The chairman: I do not think it matters whether we pass an expression of approval or not. The chairman then questioned those ai the meeting, with the result stated above.
Mr Lascelfes moved that the Government he congratulated on deciding to take the railway in Palmerston North away from the centre of the city and place it on the outskirts, thus providing adequate facilities for the railway requirements of the city without endangering the lives of the citizens. The motion was put to the meeting and passed, there being no dissentient.
