M. VAN ZEELAND’S MISSION

The Belgian Premier CM . Paul Van Zeeland) arrived to day in London and expressed satisfaction with the result of his visit to the United States. He will meet Mr Neville Chamberlain and other members of : Cabinet to-morrow in connection with his political mission in relation to the work ol rebuilding international trade, monetary co-operation and the reduction ol armaments.
The joint statement issued by President Roosevelt and M. Va.u Zeeland after the Washington talks was the subject of a question to Mr Chamberlain in the House of Commons, inquiring whether he would consult with Mr Boosevelt with a view to summoning a world conference for the attainment of the objects of M. Van Zeeland s mission. Mr Chamberlain replied' that he thought it was a superficial view to assume that the difficult problems of the world could be solved merely by calling a world conference. However, the British Government had been willing to co-operate, both by entering into the tripartite agreement and, further, in conjunction with France, bv asking the Belgian Prime Minister to make a series of enquiries, about which Mr Chamberlain hoped to liea.r from the Belgian Prime Minister himself. . An official statement issued after a conference between the Prime Minister, Mr Eden, M. Van Zeeland and the Belgian Ambassador said that M. Van Zeeland’s impressions of his recent visit to the United States weic discussed and an agreement reached a.s to the further steps that might usefullv be taken in favour of the objects of M Van Zeeland’s investigations.
