MANAWATU MEETING.
CATALOGUE SPRINGS SURPRISE. OPEN SPRINT SUCCESS. The Manawatu Racing Club’s winter meeting, one of the most successful held lor some years, was concluded in beautiful weather on Saturday afternoon. Catalogue, whose win for his local owner, Air E. L. Barnes, was very popular with sportsmen, sprang a big surprise by annexing the open sprint from a good class field in the most convincing style, despite the fact that he had not done much racing for a period. Terry had a comfortable victory in the final event. Brigadore, who won the Awapuni Steeplechase very easily, never being seriously challenged over the last halfmile, and the promising Hawera hack, Flying Chief, were the only favourites to score during the day. Owner-trainers had a remarkable run of successes, leading in no fewer than five winners. The totalisator handled £17,52-1. compared with £13.1C0 for the corresponding meeting last year, an increase of £4364, which must lie gratifying to the club, whose president (Mr C. Louisson), stewards and committeemen, and secretary (Miss M. Buchanan) had every detail arranged to ensure a successful meeting. Descriptions of the races additional to those which appeared in the first edition of the “Standard’’ on' Saturday are as follow : BRIGADORE JUMPS AYELL. Brigadore, who was unlucky enough to fall when be was challenging Clarion Cal! in the final two furlongs of the steeplechase at AYanganui, on the second day, scored an easy win in the Awapuni Steeplechase and appeared eren then to finish with something in reserve. Always prominent, ho was kept in behind the pacemakers until five furlongs from home, when be quickly juni|jed to the front and started to draw out from Forest Glow and Lucidus. Brigadore cleared liis obstacles beautifully, gaining ground at every jump. Forest Glow was just behind him coming to the second to last fence, when lie lost his rider at the jump and Padnos, who had never been prominent before, moved forward smartly over the last half-mile and finished in second place, bringing off something of a surprise. He was ten lengths ahead of Lucidus, the Bay of Plenty Steeplechase winner.
Lucidus was the first to show out from Padnos, Riotous, AVykemist, Brigadore and Forest Glow, hut going into the hack stretch the second time Lucidus was the pacema.ker from Forest! Glow, and Brigadore. AVykemist made .an unsuccessful attempt to go with them. Forest Glow temporarily took charge, but Lucidus was again in charge from Brigadore passing through the straight the second time. Riotous, who had moved up soon dropped back to last and five furlongs from home the order was Forest Glow. Lucidus and Brigadore. The latter then went to the front and began to draw away, his only Serious challenger being Forest Glow, whose rider, \V. J. McDowell, was unseated at the second to last fence. Riotous finished fourth. McDowell, though removed in the ambulance, was not seriously injured. TAITORU SUCCESSFUL. Taitoru, with his usual dash, won the Palmerston North Handicap from International who, slow to get away, made a late run in an attempt to catch the leader, be Grand, who was the early pacemaker into the straight, was beaten into third place. Le Grand led Taitoru. Taillight, Gay Boy, International and Rona Bay from the start, this being the order practically into the hack straight. Half a mile from home Rona Bay made a forward move on the outside and, with Gay Boy, was going up to the front as Le Grand came round the final bend in charge from Taitoru, Taillight and International. However, they did not go on with it and Taitoru came through to catch Le Grand at the distance. International coming fast with a late run into second place. Taillight rail a good race into fourth place. AVJN FOR FLYING CHIEF. Flying Chief, made a firm favourite for the Milson Handicap, justified the public’s confidence,''- winning the six furlong event in hollow style by five lengths. In the rush from the barrier positions at the start, Te Huia and Old Surrey were in the front from Flying Chief, Silent Acre and Dawning Light. Half -a mile from home Te Huia and Old Surrey were together in charge, with Flying Chief moving up on the outside. Te Huia and Old Surrey Jed into the straight from Flying Chief, Royal Feast and Quadroon. Once in line, Flying'Chief soon settled the opposition, hut Te Huia hung on for second place from Sporting Gift. Old Surrey faded over the last hit after making a prominent showing, apparently being in need of a race. AVON GOING AAYAY.
Catalogue, having Ms first start since his second to Padishah in the Coronation Cup at Hastings, won the Broadway Handicap in the easiest style by four lengths, and was actually going away from the field at the finish of the seven furlongs. He paid the largest dividend of the day. Passion Flower, at home over this distance, ran a good race into second place at the liead v of a bunched field. The strong favourite, Notium, who got away smartly, could not get closer than third. Airing was a good fourth after being prominent throughout. Though. Airing was first out of the barrier, Notium took charge inside a furlong from Airing, Winsome Lu, Catalogue, Mister Quex, Lady Tna, Alby and Passion Flower, Catalogue was taken through to the front and had charge from Notium, Mister Quex. Airing and Lady Ina across the top. This was still the order three furlongs from home. Catalogue came into the straight with a break on the field, and they could make no impression on him up the straight. He was actually widening the gap at the finish. After Airing, who was in fourth place, came Mister Quex, who had made a prominent showing, Alby, Pukeko and Grand Jury. TERRY’S LATE RUN Last to pass through the straight the first time, Terry, who had been unlucky at Dannevirke, secured a late run on the rails to come through and win the Broadway Handicap nicely from Warehi, who had been one of the pacemakers throughout. Chat, who just shaded Terry for favouritism, ran a disappointing race after her’good showing at Wanganui. Warehi, Corroboree, Master Limond and Corowa were the early leaders, with Hunting Maid, Terry, and Chat at the rear of the field. There was practically no change in the order of the leading division into the straight, where Thurwind, who finished fourth was putting in his run. Corroboree faded after looking dan- ! gerous at the turn for heme. Hunting Maid finished ill fiftl place.
