LAND AT ORAKEI.
REPLY TO MAORIS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND. July 3. The following radio message has been received from Mr M. J. Savage: “The Government’s intentions regarding the Ornkei Maoris are not now quite so definite.” The Maoris sent Mr Savage a message on June 29 and the Prime Minister replied that he had referred the matter to Hon. P. Fraser, while Mr Fraser sent a message to the Maoris giving the text of his reply to Mr Savage. That l-eply stated that Mr Savage’s promise made to the Maoris at Ngaruawahia before his departure would be honoured and the Maoris believe that the promise means they will be Compensated at Orakei and not elsewhere. Mr Fraser added that the land was needed for the Government housing scheme, but Ni Hint, the Orakei chief, stated to-dav that it was the first time that any housing scheme had been mentioned in relation to Orakei. Hira expressed satisfaction with Mr Savage’s attitude.
