OBITUARY

MISS MARION MOORE. The late Miss Marion Moore, who died at Palmerston North to-day, was horn at Clyde, Otago, in the palmy days of tiie Dmistan goldfields, her father, the late Police Inspector Nanniel Mooro, having charge of the mounted gold escort between Dunstan and Dunedin in those stirring and adventurous days, he having been specially selected because of his previous experience on tlie Bendigo goldfields, Victoria. Miss Moore received her early education at the Lawrence District High School under Hector Stenhouse. and after two years’ teaching experience at Invercargill entered the Normal 'Framing College, Dunedin, and was then appointed as infant mistress successively at Patutahi (Poverty Bay), Port. Allurin’, Wairoa, Dannevirke, Feilding. Central (Palmerston North), and Whangarei. Miss Moore’s expert knowledge of the Montessori and Kindergarten systems, also her strong personality and intense interest in the welfare of her pupils, gave her a deservedly high and outstanding reputation in her profession, her schools being classed as observation and training centres for trainees and others. Miss Moore was president for a period of the Manawatu branch of the Women Teachers’ Association. Alter retiring Miss Moore attended the “World Missionary Conference in Jerusalem in 1928 and then engaged in fearless and strenuous Christian missionary 7 work during the riots at Jerusalem, also at Cairo, and at the Soldiers’ Canteen at Isinailia, on the Suez Canal. Returning to Palmerston North Miss Moore was elected president ot the Manawatu branch of the W.C.T.U. , secretary of the Manawatu branch of the National Council of y* omen ; and was actively 7 associated with various Christian bodies in the district. Never sparing herself, Miss Moore greatly overtaxed her strength up till quite recent weeks in her strenuous service for others, having a large correspondence with her “contacts” everywhere., including her Isniailia soldiers. Her strength failed rapidly during the last few weeks till her demise this morning. She will he greatly missed byy a large circle of friends throughout New Zealand.

MRS MARY LONERGAN. Per Press Association. HASTINGS, July 3. The death has occurred at Hastings of Mrs Mary Lonergan, aged 99. She was born and married in County Clare. Ireland, and arrived in New —ealand on the ship Hudson in 1873. Her home was in Napier in the earlv pioneering davs. She leaves a family 7 of five married daughters and two sons. Her husband predeceased her about 25 years ago.
