IRISH COMET’S WITHDRAWAL. ' (By “Spectator.”) Irish Comet, (lie winner of Hie Great Northern Steeplechase, was riot accepted for in the Wellington Steeplechase because he contracted a cold, and it was decided not to send him to Trentham. It is hoped that ho will soon recover, as it is intended to send him to Riccarton for the Grand National Steeplechase. Veteran Black Duke.
Though rising 15 years, the veteran Black Duke, who in 11 seasons’ racing, averaging 18 races a year, lias bad just under 20 per cent, of wins, was to start in the steeplechase at Oamaru to-day, 11 is amazing record begun at three years and bo lias raced in every season since then, contesting to date 232 races for 47 wins, 32 seconds, 25 thirds and 123 times unplaced, winning stakes and place-money totalling £8422. Only as a ten-year-old and in tlio present season when lie appeared for tlie first time at the Dunedin mooting, lias bo failed to win. F. Davis in Wanganui.
With tli object of making use of the good winter conditions at Wanganui tu prepare his team which is to go to Australia in August, F. Davis, the Woodvillc trainer, arrived in Wanganui on Thursday with his string. It consists of tlnco of the current season’s leading juveniles in Francis Drake, Courtcrafl, and Aiwai, tlio rising four-year-old Mandamus, and two rising two-year-olds in Homily (PosterityHomage) and the Limond —Jewel of Asia colt. Wotan, Black Friar, China Clipper, Red Manfred, Tout le Monde, Inleniiitiomi'., l’antoon and Elanuge will be J. Fryer’s team to leave for Australia on Thursday next. llis hurdler, Soloist, now in Australia, is reported to be well and ready to race.
Cardsharp,*. 1 Not Racing. Though it was originally intended to race Cardsliarper, who has made good progress since resuming work, at Trentliani, his trainer, 11. Gray, lias decided that lie is not forward enough. Cardsharper probably will not race until the Combined Hunts’ meeting at Now Ply mouth in September. Collision In Form.
Collision, who raced with outstanding success in his hurdles engagements on the northern circuit, will be ridden by C. McGovern at Trentham. He is in grea. fettle and apparently continues to retail top form. May Be Useful. Sleepy, winner of the steeplechase al Dannevirke, has always been regarded as a promising young jumper and since being placed in regular training lias made splendid progress. On Saturday last lie was handy throughout to run up fast and take the lead four furlongs from home, aftor which ho was going comfortably to win, casing up, by four lengths. It was a most attractive effort and indicates that Sleepy is going to bo decidedly useful in hunters’ steeplechases, for there should be room for him to improve still further.
A Promising Gelding. Waitaka shaped promisingly in running second to Potent at Ashburton. He is a five-year-old gelding by Robespierre from the Martian —Two Step mare Mazurka, the dam of Buglo Note, a successful sprinter some years back in Southland when carrying the colours of Mr J. L. Hannon and trained by F. W. Ellis. Toti dal Monte.
Mr L. Connolly lias purchased from Mr F. Williamson the brood mnre Toti dal Monte (Gay Lad—Trebelli II), dam ol Rebel Song and Silvox, with a filly foal by Robespierre, who is a sister to Rebel Song. Trebelli 11, dam of Toti dal Monte, is tlio dam of Autopay and Sopra. Sopfu produced a good horse in Reonui and High Note, who has left Conccrtpitch and Irish Fiddle. Peck Rides Winner.
The West Australian jockey E. Peck, who was in New Zealand for most of the current season, and had mounts at the Manawatu autumn meeting, recently rode his first winner since returning to Australia. This was on Nirimba in a welter event at the W.A.T.C. winter meeting early this month. Hamilton Team Withdrawn.
Having received advice that the Trentliani track is very heavy, Mrs R. T. Reid, of Hamilton, has decided against sending Whirling, Light Comedy, and Jan Ridd to the Wellington meeting. Locknit’s First Win.
Locknit, who opened his winning account at Ashburton, is a rising three-year-old by Siegfried from Polly Poachum, owned by Messrs Donnelly and Wanldyn and trained by J. Tomkinson. Polly Poachum is also the dam of Jenny Diver and Mclleath. Bred by Mr J. S. McIzeod, she is by Feramorz from Tressida, thus being a half sister to Raasay, ltunnymedo, My Own, and company. The rising three-year-old filly Land Girl, by Surveyor from Llanore, who has been hacked around the roads for some weeks, will resumo work at Ellerslic shortly. On the few occasions that Land Girl appeared in public she clearly demonstrated that sho is endowed with speed. When this filly has had more experience she should be capable of paying her way in hack sprint events. Derby Winner’s Pedigree.
The pedigree of Mid-day Sun. tin's year’s winner of the Derby, presents a profusion of illustrious names, and well may it be contended that it is fitting he should adorn the list of winners of tlio race. A strain of St. Simon and of Musket on each side is a feature of Mid-day Sun’s pedigree, and, with Trenton and Carbine’s names included, there is much to enthuse over. The leading lines in Midday Sun’s pedigree are as follow Sire : Solario, by Gainsborough, son of Bayardo and grandson by Bay Ronald, from Sun Worship, by Sundridgo, son of Amphion, from Doctrine, by Ayrshire, son of Hampton. Georgo from the north several months ago, and is a rising three-year-old full-brother to Hot Dance, who was in the stable for a time
but was returned lo his owner. He is a bay gelding by Spear Dance from the Glen Gowrie —Uranium mare Sports Queen, hence besides bis full-relationslnp to Hot Dance he is a half-brother to Prince Val and is closely related to other good performers such as Medding March (Great Northern Hurdles), Abcrfeldy, anu Chromodyne. The name is tlio reverse spelling of Robert.
