GRAIN AND PRODUCE.
CANTERBURY MARKETS QUIET.
Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, July 2The jrrain and produce markets have been very quiet this, week and even potaX which have been active for some weeks, have begun to slacken olf with the departure of South Amencan slnps Three more ships are aval able, two this month and one in hut a fair proportion of the cargoes lor these is already in store. There appears to be practically no interest at all among North Island buyers in tho Canterbury market, there is some inquiry for reds, hut whites, owing to low quotations front T imaru, are weak. Potatoes arc not offering from the country very freely, mainly because wet weather has held up digging, 'f ile wot weather has also hold tip wheat sowings, and though many farmers held hack ir.creared supplies for seed they have beep unable to got it in. The July increment of a penny has gone on to milling wheat, but it is likely that farmers who have held till now will wait for the further two halfpenny increments in August and September bo/ore selling. Imports of oats and chaff from Tasmania to northern markets have weakened quotations here, and thore is no great amount of business in either. The small seeds market continues very quiet.
A further consignment of New Zealand sheep will be taken to Japan this month when a shipment of 1000 will bo loaded at Lyttelton by the steamer (.hifuku Maru.
