SANDON.

OLD BOYS’ REUNION*. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SANSON, June 3. O lio most popular social event of the season as far as Sanson is concerned is die reunion ball, held annually by the Sandon Old Pupils’ Association. Last evening the Sandon Town Hall was the scene of many happy reunions, when old pupils from far and near gathered to renew acquaintances with school friends of many years’ standing. The outstanding success of die function reflects great credit on the committee, who had been untiring in their efforts to make the ball an even greater sue 4 ss dian usual. The following were on the committee: Messrs G. Short (president), J. C. Pagan, D. Hammond. 0. Ellerm, C. P. Eglinton, C. 0. Oppatt, and the secretary (Mr A. Nesbit). There were also many able helpers. A feature was the decoration of the hall, which was tastefully done ip rose-pink and old gold. A canopy of twisted streamers hid the entire coiling, while each wall was decorated with a huge golden moon, and many stars peeped from behind largo punga fern leaves. The stage was decorated to tone, while the walls and ceiling of the supper room (where a sitdown supper was served) were also decorated in rose-pink and gold toning-. The evening opened with the National Anthem, followed by the opening waltz. Mr Shelton (Palmerston North) 'entertained with vocal solos, and Miss Nicholson Highland dancing, Mr V. Nicholson (Palmerston North) accompany her on the bagpipes. Mr G. Short (president), in hi.s address, mentioned that the association was one of 32 years’ standing and it spoko volumes for work done that the roll signed that night was the largest in the history of the associa lion. This was evidently largely due to ihe fact that tile younger members were taking a more active interest, and it was specially helpful, as a number of the older members wore passing oil. Mr Short said it was with Jeep regrot that he had learned of ihe passing of Mr John I/ondon, of Tauranga, recently. lLe also apologised for the error in omitting two old pupils from the list of those who had passed away during the year. Miss Pauline McKonzio and Mrs Fred Thompson. Mr Short caid tlio younger members had been busy for a week decorating the ball. Although living in a changing world. Sanson was still “the same old place,” with the same hospitable people in it. Ho reminded members of the memorial service on Sunday and hoped as many as possible would bo present. He also thanked the committee for the great assistance they had given him. He then presented Mr Jack l'agan with his jiast president’s badge and Mr Ken Pearce wtih his past secretary's badge. Mr Short then calle on Mr A. V*. Thompson (head teacher, Terraco End, Palmerston North) to say a few words. Mr Thompson regretted that, although he lived but a short distance from Sanson, ho had not been a more regular attendant at the reunion gatherings, but lie had not lost interest in the old boys. He congratulated Mr Short and those responsible for making the gathering such a success, and he was sure that they niuet be pleased with the results. Schools, said Mr Thompson, >vere judged, not by the number of examinations passed, but by the type of citizens turned out, and Sanson had turned out many worthy men and women. His presence oil the platform went to show how the old boys who originated the association wore rapidly thinning out, as lie was one of the “babies of the association. Although the evening was very happy, there was a touch of sadness, a tinge ot regret for those who had passed on. Mr Thompson said the efforts of the old bojs bore fruit outside, and members from other parts of the island greatly appreciated the function. On behalf of the old bojs he thanked the committee and all those responsible. Apologies and congratulatoiy letters and telegrams were received from Mr and Mrs 11. and E. Gardiner (nec K. R. Poad, at school 1873), Kltliam; N. If Swanger (Rotorua), Mr and Mrs A. K. Johnston (Mata Mata), Mr W. J. Croucher (Palmerston North), Mr and -Mrs J. K. McNeoly (Wellington). Miss J. McKenzie, Mrs D.
