TEMPERANCE UNION

AIAORI DAY. Airs Carter presided at the monthly meeting, yesterday, of the Palmerston North branch of the Women’s Chris tian Temperance Union. Aliss Suth crland gave a short reading suitable for Alaori Day, and Airs Hodder reao the correspondence, which was Iron. Airs Young, district secretary, saying that the resolutions passed at the Do minion convention were to be passec on to the various ministers and that the district convention was to be belt, in Feilding in September. Airs Carter said they were making an attempt to rehabilitate the “Y,’ a youth, branch, and that Air Prici had agreed to be president. The re solution in connection with crimina abortion passed at the recent meeting of the National Council of AVomen (at which Dr. Doris Gordon had been the speaker) was read and carried unanim ously. As this was Alaori Day, a good as sortment of used clothing was brought to the meeting and it was decided that it l>e sent to Sister Eleanor Dobby. who is working among the Alaoris in Hokianga, North Auckland. Afembers were reminded of the jumble sale to be held in conjunction with the local branch of the New Zealand Alliance in July, and were asked to save their used clothes for that purpose. Airs G. C. Petersen was introduced by Airs Carter, and gave a very interesting account of her trip to the tlrewera district and of her contact with the Alaoris there. She gave great praise to the wonderful work that was being done bv the missionary sisters, and said that they were able to accomplish five times as much as ordinary people. They did not consider themselves heroic for working so far away in the backblocks. but thought that they were specially privileged in being called to this work. The speaker said that the sisters found that when the Alaoris learned to drink intoxicating liquor thmr work was ever so much more difficult and that the Alaoris would he assisted as a race if liquor were withheld from them. A vote of thanks was accorded Airs Petersen. The meeting closed with the pronouncing of the Benediction.
