FIRE AT FITZHERBERT WEST
HOUSE DESTROYED. The residence of Mr W. A. Carter, of Fitzherbert West, was razed to the ground by fire, yesterday afternoon. The outbreak occurred at about 3.1 o p.m., and the flames, originating in the kitchen and fanned by a strong easterly wind, gained a hold so,.quickly ill at very little in the house could be saved. Mr Carter, who was working nearby, was unaware of the occurrence until his wife ran out of tli£- front door and called to him. but by then it was too late to remove any of the furniture, which was not insured. Ff the wind had been blowing in the opposite direction Mr Carter would perhaps have lost not only the house but also a number of outbuildings and a haystack, which were nearby. As it was such a quantity of burning material was scattered by the wind that tree stumps in an adjoining paddock weie ignited. . The bouse was one of the first to he built on thr Makerua area, the timber for its construction having to be hauled to the site on a bush tramway be lon g--3tie to one of the sawmills operating in that district in the early days.
