PUBLIC WORKS BUILDINGS

TWO LARGE CONTRACTS LET. Two large contracts for new buildings at Palmerston North have been let by the Public Works Department, the aggregate value being well over £20,000. One contract, which provides for the erection of further accommodation for the civil branch of the department at the Cook Street offices, plus the erection of a garage and workshops building, has been let to a Palmerston North firm. The addition for the use of the civil branch will provide a new wing to the present building, running from that end of the present structure nearest the railway, away from Cook Street. The garage and workshops will be erected on the adjacent land, which lias been held for a long period of years as an education reserve. The new wing will be two storeys in height, and will he roughly two-thirds the size of the present structure. The contract price for the two buildings is over £13,000, and the contractor will very soon be commencing operations. The second contract, involving a sum of £B4OO, is for the erection of an office mid laboratory building on the Plant Research Bureau’s land at the rear of the dairy factory at Massey College. This building will be of one storey, and the contract has been let to a Wellington firm. A start is expected to be made there in the near future also. Recently there was finished a further building at Afitson. at the rear of the Union Airways hangar, wherein additional radio equipment is housed. There are now two poles in use, each 00ft high, and at a Inter date these will lie replaced with towers 7oft high. The new installation was brought into commission with the inauguration of the Auckland-Wellington air service. FKILDING HIGH SCHOOL.

At the present time tenders are being called for the erection of a substantial addition to the buildings at the Feiiding Agricultural High School, to provide for dining quarters and kitchen amenities for the pupils and living quarters for the staff. The new building will be situated on the vacant triangle opposite the present hostel.
