RURAL BAKINGS.
The killing season for South Otago freezing works closed a lew days ago with a total of sheep and lambs of 251,774, a decrease of 30,033 compared with the previous season. Cattle killed numbered 3729, a decrease ol 123 ;. pigs, 737, a decrease of 219. These figures cover killings for export only. Fair prospects of developing a market for limited quantities of New Zealand apples in the East are noted in the annual report of the New Zealand Fruit Export Control Board. Shipments in 1936 arc shown as 7641 cases and m 1937 6205 cases, the reason given for the decrease being more intense competition this year. New Zealand sent two shipments of apples to Europe last season and both were sold at very satisfactory prices. There are now considerable difficulties however, and while it is hoped to establish a footing in Germany and France it is impossible to forecast the conditions for next season. These statements are made in the annual report of the New Zealand Fruit Export Control Board.
