DANCE RECITAL
MISS JEAN SCOTT’S PUPILS
A CAPTIVATING PROGRAMME
A dance recital eagerly awaited was staged in the Opera House last evening, when tiie pupils of Miss Jean Scott delighted a packed house with skipping, operatic, Highland, tap and clog dance numbers, the pianiste was Miss Z. Leamy, and the piper Mr Geo. Scott, while Mr W. J. A\ oollett proved an excellent stage manager. 'l l turning was of a liigli order, and
lie tosreacli-
ed its climax in the national and operatic numbers. Miss Scott had the hearty co-operation of the parents, and the costumes were a credit to all concerned. From the opening number, a charming “Hubble l>allet,'’ to the spectacular linale, enthusiasm ran high, encores ueuig demanded for practically every item. Classic frocks ot flesh pink were worn for the opening ballet, in which there was gracelul posturing, and a dainty little soloist emerging from a monsLer shell. “rUy Lady Hainty” was one of the sweetest items on tne progranime, the most youthful performer appearing in old English style ol lavender tulle with circlets of ribbon and dainty flat bat and tan. Mounds of applause greeted the 42 performers, some very tiny, who gave a spirited .Highland fling; also those contributing a Highland reel and sword dance. Miss Isa McKenzie, one of Miss Scott’s assistants, is a popular performer and
tier Spanish dance m costume of frilled
ilack tafhKu, lined with scarlet and scarlet accessories, was one of the liighngnts of the evening. Miss McKenzie’s second offering was a classic number to “Liebestraum.” 'J’ap-dancing figured largely in all its variations, Miss Zoo Bailey, another assistant at the school, being an outstanding performer, appearing first in the approved costuino of rose and black satin. An operatic ballet, the members in charming ballot frocks of ivory satin and stiffened tulle with pink roses at the waist-lino, opened the second half of the programme, the grouping being most attractive. Miss McKenzie danced in a lovely long ballet frock of tulle over silver iame with circlets of ribbon. One of the most effective numbers was the senior tap ballet, the girls being colourful in canary satin blouses and wine velvet shorts laced with gold, in striking contrast was the graceful “Gavotte,” the “lady” attired in panniered frock oi pink taffeta over green, and her partner in green taffeta suit. A young lady with a Hair for comedy was very successful in “Late for School,” her costume being excellent. A graceful seantriiibbas and iteel o’ Tulloeli were the Scottish numbers in tile second half, followed by another classical number. A Dutch duo, quaintly costumed, was a feature, and a colourful Irish jig and reel. In this appeared the only male soloist in approved national costume with sixteen Irish washerwomen in green and scarlet, white muslin aprons and green bows, their vigorous eel bringing prolonged applause.
