The death occurred at tho Wellington Hospital last night of Mr J. McLeavey, who met with an accident in Wellington on Thursday. The deceased, who was the son of Mr and Mrs A. McLeavev, of To Iloro. was a very poptdar young man. Ho was educated at the Levin and Ohau Schools, later tnkhig up residence at To Iloro. Mr A. Bolton, after a residence of 21 years in Otaki, leaves shortly for New Plymouth, lion. R. Semple, accomnariied by Mrs Semple and tbe Public Works Department engineer, paid a brief visit to Otaki on Monday afternoon. The violet crops in Otaki have been tho poorest for years. Some unauthorised person is reported to have been destroying pukokos, which abound in the creek at Mr Elliott’s property at Rangiuru. There was a good number of euchre players on Monday night, when tho prizes were won by Mi’s Waaka and Mr J. Johnson (firsts), Mrs Bradley and Mr J. C. Meyer (seconds!. A meeting of members of the committee of the Otak : Trotting Club was held nn Monday night, Mr L. Kilmister (president) presiding. Mr Saveli (secretary) read a letter from the Under-Secretary to the Minister of Internal Affairs, stating that tot.nlisator permits : had. for the time be'ng, been allotted in full. This was supported by n letter from Mr L. G. Lowry, M.P., who offered to do all possible for the club. He suggested that for the time being it might be arranged that tho club combine with another and’hold a niee+mg. Later it might, be possible for a totafisator permit to be obtained. It was decided to canvass for trophies and thus ascertain what encouragement would bo forthcoming.
