PRIVATE ENTERPRISE.
LABOUR MEMBER’S CRITICISM. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, July 1. Replying to criticism of the Labour Government at a meeting at Otautau, Mr AV. M. C. Denham, member for Invercargill, stated that these critics said “private enterprise will be destroyed.” The National Party when it was in office gave free play to private enterprise and competition, he said. AVliat was the result? Not only did private enterprise almost destroy itself, but it came perilously close to destroying the people with it. Practically every uiclu.strv cut prices to such an extent that neither employee nor employer could live The ruthless slaughter of living standards was the order of the day ; small factories sprung up in back yards like mushrooms and a man. Ins "lie and children worked unlimited hours like slaves. . That sort of tiling occurred in every industry in New Zealand resulting in terrible poverty and high uneniplov - merit figures. Yet that was the precious “individual freedom” the National Party was erving out for. -The majority o'f our people are happier and more prosperous nnd comfortable under the Labour Government than they ever were under the rule of the National Party,” said Mr Denham.
