FRUIT TREES REMOVED.
PLANT RESEARCH BUREAU. As the present time is suitable for the shifting of trees a consignment of 2000 fruit trees for the new plant research station at Mount Albert has been fonvarded from Palmerston North to Auckland and will be planted there within the next few days. The transfer of the trees is preparatory to the shifting. eventually, of the Plant Diseases Division of the Plant Research Bureau to Auckland, where there are several officers of the division, including the director, Dr. G. 11. Cunningham, now in residence. All the commercial varieties of fruit are included in the consignment sent to Auckland, apples being numerous. English apples are represented by a number of experimental selections from the East Mailing research station, Kent, which have been partial’,- acclimatised at Palmerston North. Another interesting group of apple trees comprises selections made at Palmerston North during the past eight years, with a view “to developing new varieties or improving on those grown commercially. Stone fruits are represented mainly by peaches, nectarines, plums and apricots. Walnuts and hazel nuts are included, and a few experimental strawberries complete the consignment, some being from Queensland stock and others raised from seed.
