WELLINGTON BEATS WAIRAItAPA. SCORE OF GO TO 8. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 30. Wellington overwhelmed Wairarapa by 60 points to eight in a Rugby representative match to-day. The weather was ideal and the ground firm. The attendance was under 5000. The match gave no opportunity for the New Zealand selectors, all of whom were present, to gauge the merits of the players nominated or likely to be nominated for the All Black .trials, as it was more a practice run for Wellington than a contest of football strength. Wairarapa fielded a young and inexperienced team, no members of which showed football ability above the average. The scorers wore: For Wellington, Hansen (5), Griffiths (2), Edwards, Pringle, Le Qnesne, Andrews, Leahy, Fleming and J. Wells, tries; Pollock (3) and Fleming (4). conversions. Griffiths dropped a goal. For Wairarapa, Grantham a try and Brunton a conversion and a penalty goal.
MASSEY COLLEGE. DEFEAT AT WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, June 30. A team from Weir House, the hostel attached to Victoria University College, proved too fast and clever for a Massey College fifteen in a Rugby football match at Kelburn Park, the score being 21 to 3 in favour of Weir House. Massey College had a weak team in the field, as the first fifteen was in Auckland, playing the Auckland University team. In fact, so hard pressed was Massey College to scrape a team together that several hockey players had to be commandeered. The teams were :
University: Ngata: R. Hermans. Harpur, McLeod; Carroll, Larkin; Ongley; Anderson, Gordon, Gates, O'Shea, Blackley, Parker, Gibson, Halpin.
Massey College: Phillipps; Beattie, Begg, Dunlop; Hopewell. Simpson; Blake; Brodie, Boyens, Mildon, Easton, Sill, Sutherland, Cox, Bowie.
Shortly after the start of the game, Blake, lialf-back for Massey College, had to retire with an unsound knee, Johnstone coming on. Simpson, captain of the visiting team, went from fiveeighth to half-back. The weather was fine, and ball and ground were dry. Play was of a ragged nature till the Wier House team warmed up, and then they gave a bright display of the passing game. The Weir i House backs had pace, and frequently swept half the length of the field at Stop speed, throwing the ball about with abandon. Tries were scored for Weir House by Carroll, Blackley, McLeod ,'(2), and Hermans, three of which were 'converted by Larkin, captain of the | team. In the first spell, Gates received a nasty cut on the top of the head in going down to stop a rush, and had to retire, his place being taken by Combs. The. only points scored for Massey College were a try by Easton, which Simpson failed to improve. Among the spectators was Professor T. A. Hunter, who was present in a dual capacity, as he is warden of Weir House and chairman of tho board of got ernors of Massey College.
