CUSTOMS REVENUE
ALL-ROUND RISE. POSITION AT WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, June 30. Customs revenue collected at Wellington continues very buoyant with substantial increases under all heads. nil sources last, month totalled £445,287, compared with mm- -Mine, 1936, an increase of £50,945. Tlie net Customs revenue collected at Wellington last month totalled £289,174, compared with' £259,261 in Juno, 1936, an increase of £29.913, and compared with June, 1935, there is an _ increase of over £IOO,OOO. For the six months of the current year the revenue totals £1,720,395, compared with £1,538,015 for the corresponding period of 1936, an increase of £182,380. Comparing this year’s figures with the first six months of 1933, the worst of the depression years so far as Customs revenue is concerned, there is an increase of £794,374, the 1933 total being £926,021, or little more than half that of the current year. The duty collected on motor spirit last month totalled £36,886 at 6d a gallon and £24.599 at 4d a gallon, a total of £61,485, compared with £35.964 at Cd a gallon and £23,978 at 4d a gallon, a total of £59.942 for June, 1936, an increase of £1543. For the six months the totals arc £414,157 and £425,467 respectively, a decrease of £11,310. This decrease is due to the abnormal total of £119,736 in Alarch, 1936, caused by an adjustment of duty suspense accounts, and is not an indication that petrol consumption has decreased this year. Collections of tyre tax Inst month totalled £3116 compared with £2126 in June, 1936. an increase of £990. For the six months there is an increase of £703. the figures being £11,419 and £10.716 respectively. Sales tax collections continue very buoyant, last month’s total of £110.002 being £17.786 in excess of the £92.216 collected in June, 1936. The total for the six months. £634,836. shows an increase of £132.837 over last year’s total of £501,999. This tax came into force on February 10, 1933. and the total so far collected at Wellington is £3,630.968. Reel- excise collections for June totalled £6109, comoared with £4775 in June, 1936, an increase of £1334. For the six months the figures are £35,928 and £29,707 respectively, an increase of £6221.
AUCKLAND INCREASES. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND. June 30. An increase in revenue collected through the Customs Department in Auckland is shown in figures for June, compared with the totals for May, and also with those for June, last year. There is a substantial recovery from the seasonal all-round decrease recorded in the returns for Alay. Although sales tax in June fell slightly below that collected in Alay, all other items, including excise on beer, were higher in JunCj and for the six months of this year all returns are higher. . Customs revenue in June totalled £260,414, against £238,620 in June last year. The totals for the two months, including motor spirit tax at 6d a gallon, and tyre duty, were £327,879 and £294,841. Excise on beer amounted to £17..417, compared with £13,957, and the sales ta.x yield was £84,570, against £72,445 a year ago. For the half-year ended to-day. Customs revenue alone was £1.641,564, the total for the corresponding six months last year being £1,505,149. With motor spirit tax and tyre duty added, the reflective figures were £2,043.231 and £1.902,463. Excise on beer totalled £91.668 in the Ja.nnary-June period this year, against £77,674 last year, and receipts from sales tax were £492,390 and £394,005 respectively. CHRISTCHURCH RETURNS. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, June 30. Expansion of trade in recent months is clearly indicated by the returns issued by the Customs Department for the three months ended June 30. Compared with the same pefod in 1936, the total revenue' of the Christchurch office has increased by more than £IOO,OOO, and general Customs revenue increased by close on £60,000. Details for the three months of 1936 and 1937 respectively are: Customs, £242.047, £301.041; excise on beer, £21,101, £27,898; sales tax. £91,388, £119,067; benzine, £57,713. £67.996; tyre duty, £2400, £3036; light dues, £1445. £1900; wool levy. —. £1307; meat levy. £2363, £29OG; miscellaneous. £245, £174. Totals, £418,763, £525,391. For the month of June the figures for 1936 and 1937 respectively are: Customs. £81.006. £97,416; excise on beer, £7980, £10,871 ; sales tax. £32,283, £38,405; petrol tax. £19.389, £21,486; tyre duty. £587. £I2S6; light dues, £282, £794; wool lew. ——. £146; meat levy, £684, £1228; miscellaneous, £79, £63. Following arc the Customs returns for June, together with comparative i figures for June last year: Customs duty: Alarch, 1937, £58,408; Alnrch, 1936, £57,111; beer duty, £20,113, £21,982; sales tax, £25,178, £22,918; petrol tax, £13,260; £12,220; tyre tax, £954, £960; gold export duty, £1553, £2417.
