MARKETING POLICY
FARMERS’ CONCERN. CONFERENCE REMITS. A full opportunity for discussion on the Government’s marketing policy will be provided by a series of remits to be presented to the annual conference of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union this month. They arc as follow: ‘That the Government be asked to tako delivery and make payment on dairy produce when graded.” (Southland, North Canterbury, South Taranaki.) “That this conference call the attention of tho Government to the increasing mountain of costs that the primary industries are being called upon to bear with no opportunity of passing these costs on to consumers, as is possible in every other department of industry and commerce, and express the emphatic opinion that a substantial addition to the price for butterfat and cheese for tho current season is essential if tho farmers’ standard of living is not to be reduced further and the productive capacity of the farms jeopardised.” (Auckland and Southland.) . . . “That in computing the price ot dairy or other produce an independent tribunal of statisticians should ho set up, presided over by a Supremo Court Judge holding office for a period ot eight to ten years; that the personnel should be mutually agreed upon by a. committee consisting of equal numbers of members nominated by the dairy industry as sellers and the Government as buyers; that the price should be determined hv the tribunal from tho evidence placed before it and accepted by the Government, and that the proceedings and findings of the tribunal should he treated in the same manner as the proceedings and findings ot the Arbitration Court.” (Auckland.) “That, taking into account the increased cost of dairying, we urgo the Government to increase tho guaranteed price of butterfat to at least Is 6d per lb.” (Southland and Combined Conference, Dannevirke.)
