WOODVILLE, June 29. The settlers of Papatawa iorogathered on Fridav last to celebrate the golden jubilee of the opening of the school. The sky was overcast but ram kept off until "the evening. Mr A. Dickins, ‘ the chairman, gave a short commentary ol the progress ol the school in relation to the district. Sir Alfred Ransom outlined the difference between the old and the new educational methods. Other speakers were Messrs J. M. Hutchinson, G. Edwards and Mimro. The first toast honoured was that of the King, proposed by the chairman. The following is a. list of the other toasts: Pioneers (Sir Alfred Ransom and Air R. Charmley); Sirst Teacher (Mrs Edgar Harding and Mrs Gower), Pupils of 1887 (Mr C. Hyde and Mrs J. S. Nelson) ; Education Board (Air E. J. Harding and Air Quigley) ; The School" (Air Quigley and Mr At. M. Alunro) ; The Ladies (Air A. Gurry and Airs R. Cunningham) ; The Chairman (Sir Allred Ransom and Air A. Dickins). A jubilee cake was then illuminated by Airs Gower and Sir Alfred Ransom and extinguished by Airs Gower, who was presented with a. beautifullv-decoratcd basket by Jean Parker and also a gift from tlie Holloway family, several of whom she taught fifty years ago. Air G. jVlcLachlan, of AVoodville, had to enter the Dannevirke Public Hospital on Sunday. Visitors to Palmerston North for the Davidson-Ret-ter wedding on Saturday included Air and Airs lv. Retter, senr., and junr., Aliss Jean Retter and Air M. Singers, of AVoodville.
