AUSTRALIANS ELIMINATED. BUDGE BEATS McGRATH. CRAWFORD LACKED STAMINA. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received June 29, 10.30 a.m. LONDON, June 28. The tennis match at Wimbledon in the men’s singles between 11. W. Austin (Britain) and B. M. Grant (U.S.A.; was a hattie between similar types oi players, with tne Eng.isnnian the manner ana better all round. Grant iea o —A and mm sod point in tne second set, alter wmen Austin won live games m a row. I rank Banter's long range steadiness overcame 41. Henkel's more vigorous iiisung. J. 4'. Budge (U.S.A.) opened quietly against Vivian Jicuratii (musira.i..;, but no speeded up alter the score was 6—3 in the first set, forcing tlie Australian to drive out. McGrath nevertheless .strenuously contested every point. A aour struggle ensued in the second set, despite tne fact that tne American had lost only one game. Budge raced to a 4—l lead in the third set, nis speed telling. McGrath then played grandly and evened at 4—4. The final game went to five deuces, McGrath saving three match points. Budge thus maintained his reputation lor winning matches in straigiit sets. The encounter between J. H. Crawford (Australia) and Baron Cramm saw some beautiful driving. Crawlord was not fully fit, suffering from a cold, but he handled von Cranun’s kicking service well. The Australian led 5—4 in the second set, but von Cramm, mixing the pace cleverly, took the set. Crawforu served magnificently in the third set and, with the German overdriving, the Australian took the set. Crawlord also called the tune in the fourth set, von Cramm continuing to drive over the baseline. Fine passing shots by von Cramm enabled him to take the lead 4—l in the final set. Crawford was now very tired and had not the stamina to contest the German’s hard drives. If Crawford had won the second set he would, or, form, probably have won the match. Details:— MEN’S SINGLES.
