BOXING.

BISHOP BEATS DOWNES

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 28,

Tlie professional welterweight boxing contest between Herb Bishop (Australia) and Barney Downes (Wellington) ended in a win for Bishop on points at the end of the scheduled' twelve rounds. The outstanding feature of the match was the ability of the Wellington man to absorb punishment. He had taken paid in but four professional matches pirioir to this and he was opposed by a man who had had wide experience against Australian and American boxers. After a good showing by Downes in the first round, Bishop was always master of the situation. He appeared merciful in not attempting to knock out the Wellington man, who was ever ready to mix it. Downes ■received a fine ovation at the end of the bout.
