Mr Guy Smith, associate president of thg Chamber of Manufacturers, referring to the fear that the Federal Government would npb givo effect to the recommendations of the Tariff Board and grant increased protection to certain industries, saicj that the woollen industry was in a deplorable state and that unless something was done for the engineering trade soine firms would KUve to close. In addition to these, the match industry, paper and cardboard industries and the rubber trade were anxiously awf.iting a revision of the tariff. The toy ip.dustry, which promised great things, was nearing its death knell. The surplus stocks of Britain and Germany had been dumped into Australia and today Germany practically controlled the toy trade, the Commonwealth output having fallen 65 per cent. —Press Association.
