MIGRATION.
AGREEMENT SIGNED. LONDON, April 8. The migration agreement between the British Government and the Commonwealth has been signed. Officials of the Overseas Settlement Committee point out that new features of the agreement are: Firstly, the migrants need not possess any capital; secondly, provision is made for loans for water conservation, hydroelectric works, and butter and sugar factories as approved by the States, Commonwealth and Imperial Governments. The Colonial Office is devising the machinery by which the British approval for such schemes will be readily secured by appointing representatives in Australia, if necessary. Provision for this is included in the British Government’s estimates. The speeding up of migration depends on the speed with which the States’ schemes materialise. The British Government is prepared to honour its existing agreements with Victoria, New South Wales and West Australia, but it is anticipated that they will prefer new agreements on the more favourable terms now offered. It is believed that West Australia’s family group scheme will shortly be reopened.
