AUTUMN BLOOMS

DISPLAY AT SANSON. METHODIST CHURCH FIXTURE. There was a splendid display of autumn blooms in the public hull at Sanson yesterday, when a chrysanthemum show and sale of work were conducted in aid of the. local Methodist Church. The. chrysanthemums were the outstanding feature of a display of uniform excellence, the champion bloom of the show, the “Gallipoli,” exhibited by Mr W. G. McJarrow (Marton) exciting admiration. The judges were Flowers, Mr A. J. Shailer (Palmerston North); decorative and children’s classes, Mrs Barltrop (Feilding); vegetables, Mr A. Gibson (Marton); cooking, Mrs J. ItMoKelvie (Carnarvon). The secretarial arrangements were in the hands of Mrs W.' S. Neal (Sanson), assisted by Messrs F. Read (Sanson) and Rev. AV. S. Neal. Those in charge of stalls wore: Sewing, Mesdames Henson, H. Masters and F. Tostevin ; produce. Mesdames C. Masters, J. Masters and A. Matthews; sweets, .Misses Henson (2) and R. Masters; luncheon and afternoon tea rooms, Mesdames W. Pearce, D. Henderson and assistants. The function was conducted under the auspices of the Ladies’ Guild of the Church, and their hope to make it an annual fixture seems likely to be realised, having regard to the success attending yesterday’s effort. OFFICIAL OPENING. The show was opened by Mr J. Linklater, M.P., who was introduced by Rev. Mr Neal. “It gives me much pleasure to open the show, and I will always remember the kindness extended to ine at Sanson,” said Mr Linklater, who proceeded to state that some of the blooms exhibited were quite the best he had ever seen. He congratulated those concerned on the success of their efforts, and alluded to the desirability of teaching the young to love flowers as a means to an education in tho beautiful in life. This, he said, was a farming community and lie could congratulate the district on its success during the past season. There had been excellent prices for wool and a fair return to dairy farmers, while better still a continuance of those conditions could bo looked for next season. He referred to the early days when the Sanson region was bush-clad and stressed the need, now that they had advanced so far, to arrest the drift to the cities. He wished those conducting the function every success. The. show and sale of work were again open in the evening, when several musical items were rendered. THE PRIZE LIST. Air AlcJarrow won outright the silver vase presented by Air A. J. C. Glover for the champion bloom and also annexed the points prize. DAHLIAS. Three cactus, Airs E. Faulding 1, Airs J. AlcCall 2; six cactus, Mrs Faulding 1, Airs Neal 2 : three collarette, Airs Faulding 1; paeony, Airs Faulding 1, Airs Neal 2; single, Airs Faulding 1; three any other variety, Airs Faulding 1. Mrs Faulding won Mr A. J. Sliailer’s points prize. CUT FLOWERS.

Penny 1, Airs Charlesworth 2; decorated bowl of chrysanthemums, Airs Charlesworth 1, Airs J. Ale Call 2; decorated table, Airs Neal 1.
