FOOD COMMISSION
RECOMMENDATIONS MADE. PUBLICITY TO CHECK ABUSES. LONDON" April 26. Tho Alorning Post and the Daily Express states that the Food 1 Commission’s report, the draft of which has been approved, definitely recommends the creation of a Food Council, charged with the duty of watching prices and investigating profits. The Daily Express says that the chairman will be a highly-paid permanent official, and that tho council will bo able, by influence and publicity, to check abuses, but will prosecute when it is necessary. Tho Commission will express alarm at the concentration of the meat export trade in the hands of a strong group, but will state that no evidence was adduced that this power was used to the disadvantage of the public. On the contrary, group control often acted for the purchaser’s benefit, but the very existence of such a power presented a possible menace. If tlie menace became active, tlie Ministry might have to consider entering into direct competition, but such an entry in the wheat trade would be out of the question.—A. and N.Z. cable.
