LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS.
Despite the somewhat poor attendances of electors at the meetings addressed by candidates for municipal honours, a good deal of interest is being taken in the local body elections to-morrow and it is generally conceded that heavy voting will he recorded when the poll closes in the evening. For the nine seats on the Borough Council the electors have the choice of nineteen candidates from whom a good working council should be chosen. We are not alone in holding the opinion that the list of candidates could huve been considerably strengthened by the nomination of several of Palmerston North’s successful business men who, unfortunately, are unable to devote the time necessary to council business should- they be elected. In this respect Palmerston North’s case is not singular. The chief need is to return a council capable of estimating the requirements of the borough for the next two years and, at the same time, keeping a careful check upon expenditure and sanctioning only necessary undertakings, so that the municipality will be governed on wise and progressive lines. The half-holiday question has, naturally, provoked a good deal of discussion and the supporters of cadi movement anticipate victory, so that a close poll may lie expected. The election of two candidates to represent this and adjacent districts on the Wellington Harbour Board has resulted in a contest, the first for many years. Other local contests are for four seats on the Hospital Board and for three on the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board, the successful candidates representing the borough in each case.
