AERIAL TRANSPORT.
ENGLAND TO WELLINGTON,
Received April 27, 8.50 a.m. LONDON, April 26
Commander liurney, in a paper on the airship in aerial transport, read before the Institution of Aeronautical Engineers, discussing the effect of tropical weather on an airship’s lift, said it would not be a serious matter because only three intermediate stations need be made on the England to New Zealand route. Subject to commercial considerations, these stopping places should as nearly as possible be upon the arc of a great circle drawn between the two termini. It would be found that the most favourable positions would be Bagdad, Colombo and Fremantle or Perth. On such a route it should be possible, assuming the airship’s max; mum speed be 90 miles per hour, for an average of 70 miles to be main ;.iined. Thus the time of the flight would be from England to Bagdad 37 hours, Bagdad to Colombo 41 hours, Colombo to Perth 51 hours, and Perth to Wellington 38 hours. Allowing for loss of time in refuelling at Bagdad and Colombo, the trip from England to Fremantle should be achievable in six and uhalf days.—A. and N.Z. cable.
