PRISONER FROM IRELAND.
IMPRISONMENT LEGAL. LONDON, April 22. After a two days’ hearing the Court discharged the rule nisi for a writ of habeas corpus on behalf of Maguire. Lord Hewart, in delivering judgment, expressed the opinion that the provisions of the Penal Servitude Act made it clear that Maguire’s detention in Maidstone Gaol was lawful. —Reuter.
It was cabled on March 30: The first stop to test the ease affecting tho numerous Irishmen imprisoned in English gaols was taken, Mr Slesscr applying for a writ, of habeas corpus in connection with Maguire,, who was sentenced to four years’ penal servitude at Belfast in 1923, and was incarcerated in Maidstone gaol. The justice of the conviction was not questioned, but the issue raised was whether a person convicted in Ireland could legally bo imprisoned in England.
